Q: Why am I hurting real bad from taking forteo shots My legs hurt me real bad

When I say I have tried everything I mean it. I have lost 4 inches in height. I have had all the pills you can take, I took boniva in an IV. for every 3 months  and it did not work. I have had the Reclast shot . I also have went thru 11 levels of kypoplasty. That is where the Dr put balloons and clement in your back.  The last x-ray I had was not good my bones look like real thin.I was told that I had osteoporis 8 years ago. I am all the time breaking ribs. But I just cant give up. Thanks for listening   By the way my name is Patty and I am 63 years old. And  now I take the forteo shot, and I have severe knee and hip pain. What do you think I should do.

Hi Patty:  Gosh you sure have been through a lot!!  I'm so sorry you are having so much trouble and no visible benefits from the osteo meds.  Did the kyphoplasty help at all?  Did you regain any height from the procedure and did it repair the fractures?  I'm sorry I have more questions than answers, but your last shot for bone growth is the Forteo, so if there's anyway you can stick it out I would try to do that.  If the pain is just too difficult to withstand then you could stop taking it, but it may really help your bones to get stronger, and prevent future fractures.

Has the Dr ordered a bone marker test to see how the Forteo is doing?  At least if you had this test you'd know if it's working.  I took Forteo for 2 years, after 6 frax's, and did really well on it.  I didn't have the side effects your having so it's hard to say what you should do, since you really are the only one who can decide, with the help of your Dr.

Here's a link on the test I mentioned and see if you can't find out how the Forteo is doing, at this point, at least this would give you some idea if it's worth continuing.  If you've only been on Forteo for a short time, the pain *may* go away.

Good luck and I hope the pain goes away.

Dear Patty -- you are a trooper!  Hang in there!

I am no expert -- but my dad (72) took some new medication recently and it made his joints ache horribly.  As I researched online I found that the joint pain was his body adjusting to the medication.

He was only to take the medication for a week -- and at the end of the dosage his joint pain did go away.

I sure hope this helps you somehow.  Please keep us posted on your progress -- I think this message board is a great help for others.

Sincerely,
