Q: is fosamax contraindicated for tooth extraction and tooth filling

have taken fosamax since 2004 and stopped october 2008. will have to undergo tooth extraction and tooth filling this month. can i have these two procedures done

Hi dada:  Hopefully your oral surgeon has explained the association between fosamax and the precautions that need to be taken when having a tooth extraction.

 

A very small number of people develop osteonecrosis of the jaw from bisphosphonate use (fosamax et al.) but those who took it intravenously seemed to be at a greater risk of this, but it's still a small number of people.

 

Here's a link from the American Dental Association on this topic.  Ask your oral surgeon if there is any thing you need to do prior to the extraction, to prevent any possible problems.  Your level of risk is still low for osteonecrosis, but I would still read the above link and talk to your surgeon about it.
