Q: My D12 & L4 vertebrae was damaged 6 yrs back in accident. My age is 56 yrs and body weight is 75 kg.

I have been feeling pain and uneasyness in my back for quite . Now I got my MRI done and found that there is fatty replacement and degeneration in L1-2, L3-4 and L4-5. There is Osteoporasis with me.I have been prescribed BONVIVEL 150 to be taken once a month and have been prescribed SHELCAL 500 & ALPHCALCIDOL 0.25. I am worried about side effects of BONVIVEL 150. Also just not finding the exact excercises to be done and the specific vegetables, fruits, dairy products and other cereals & edibles to be taken.

Hi V.K.:  I'm not sure what Bonvivel is; could you mean Boniva 150 mgs -taken once a month?  If you are asking about Boniva here is a link on it from HealthCentral.  Here's some information on what exercises are recommended by the National Osteoporosis Foundation for osteoporosis.  Since you have a problem with your lower back, I would try and see a physio therapist to see if they couldn't give you specific exercises to strengthen your bone, but also protect your back from further injury.  Once you injure your back you have to be very careful with bending, twisting, and strecthing, but a therapist should be able to give you an evaluation and some recommendations that are safe that could be done at home for both.

Here's some information on calcium rich foods (From the National Institute of Health) that should help you to increase your calcium and vitamin D.

I'm not sure if you are saying you have a lumbar disc or a vertebra problem.  I would discuss your question with your Dr. and see if he or she can't answer this for you.

Good luck and if you can clarify the medication that would help.  Take Care...
