Is it ok to walk up and down 8 flights of stairs or is that putting too much strain on the bones?

Hi Taffy, welcome and thanks for your question.  According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, stair climbing is good weight bearing exercise.  Here's a link on more recommendations from the NOF on exercise with osteoporosis.  It doesn't say how much stair climbing you should do, so I'd check with your Dr to be sure you don't have some other medical problem that stair climbing could make worse.

Any exercise where you have to lift your body weight is considered weight bearing, along with some other classifications which you can find above.

Good luck with your exercise and osteoporosis!

Thanks for your input.  I deliver books to a senior citizens center.  I usually take the stairs 8 flights up and deliver books working my way  down to the first floor.  I was hopeful that this was a healthy  exercise.  One day a week I do Yoga.  One day I deliver books.  I bike and walk other days.  I just have to be careful not to fall in any activity.

Thanks again.

ps  where is the link on NOF exercise?

Hi glad I could help, your exercise sounds good, just be careful and incorporating some balance exercises would help as well since you have to carry books up those stairs.  The link is the words "a link" in Blue within the sentence.  Just click on the blue words and it will take you to the NOF and a page on exercises.  Also look for the balancing exercises which I think are on the same page.  If they aren't let me know and I'll post another link.  Just remember that on this web site the links are always words, or web addresses (URL's) in blue font color.

Good luck...

Hi I just checked that link and it does give some ideas for balance exercise, and stair climbing is one of them.  Just be sure to read the whole page, and then at the bottom I definitely recommend downloading the free pamphlet (pdf) for "Download NOF's Moving Safely Handout."  You'll need Adobe reader on your computer to download, but if you don't have it, you should be able to download the free application from that page.  I use Adobe pdf all the time so it's worth having since so many web pages come in this format, and I link to pdf files all the time.  On the NOF site the download link for this pamphlet is in red/maroon at the bottom of the page, where it says "Download NOF's Moving..." where here at (Osteo Connection, ours are in blue).

Hope this helps...
