Q: I need some simple exercises for osteoporisis of the spine

I have a T score of -2.9 in my spine despite the fact that I've been on Fosamax for 5 years. It was -2.1 when I started and has gotten worse. One problem is I have chronic low back pain and cannot do most exercises that would help to strengthen the bones of my spine.

Are there any exercises you can recommend for me? I also have knee problems but I've been trying to use the stairs whenever possible.

I do back stretches every night and have been doing them for 8 years. Some entail bending at the waste. Should I stop doing those?

I'm very worried about spinal fractures. My back hurts enough from my soft tissue issues.

Thank you.

Hi Jane, welcome... Sorry to hear about your t-scores!  Since you have back pain problems, you'd have to get recommendations from someone who specializes in particular exercises for this pain and bone loss together.  Will your insurance allow you to see a Physical Therapist?  if so, I would ask your Dr. if he/she could write an order to see one.  Once you have an appt. with someone who specializes in this area, you'll know what is best for you for exercise.

I would also look into secondary causes and medications that cause bone loss since both of these can make you scores worse if you have any of them and they are going un-treated.

If you see a Physical Therapist, look for someone who had education in the field of bone loss and back injuries.  If you need help finding someone, you can look up PT's in your area through the APTA association.  When you call for an appt just be sure that the therapist is qualified in this field and go from there, and I'm sure you'll find someone who can work up an individualized program that is just right for you with your given limitations.  Be careful to not jump into a program that isn't geared to you specific needs since that could cause more problems.

If you have another question, just post again, and please check the medications and medical disorders that cause bone loss.

Thank you.  Actually I wrote to my doctor after posting this.  It turns out that my numbers were not what I'd thought.  It's -2.6 in the spine and -1.6 in the hip.  Much better than I'd remembered - or not remembered.

I am feeling much better about it now.  I will still look into exercise and also look at other things that might help or make it worse.

Thanks again.

Hi Jane, I'm thrilled your scores are better than you thought, that's great!  Be sure to get the recommended calcium, D, weight bearing exercise and also check the secondary medical and medication causes as well.  Just be sure that any exercise you do is something that will help with any possible limitations or injuries.  We need to do so many different things to raise our scores, so read as much as you can.  And Good Luck again...Smile
