How do they compare in quality, effectivness, and side effects?
Hi Sue, welcome and thanks for your question. When a drug goes off patent, and another company makes the generic version they have to follow the same FDA guidelines for effectiveness and quality. The active ingredients should be the same as the brand name, however some of the inactive ingredients may vary a little.
Your best bet is to talk to someone who has taken both the brand name Miacalcin and now the generic and see if they feel it's working and the same quality as the brand. You can also talk to your local pharmacist and have them give you the patient insert on both meds and compare them yourself. Ask the Pharmacist if there is any difference between the two. I do know that some people feel that *some* generics are not exactly the same as their brand counter part, but the reason is usually due to some type of allergy the patient might have with one of the fillers or inactive ingredients.
Good luck
