Q: Using Forteo past 1 month and have been facing sudden leg weakness causing falls

Hi, My mother is 60 years of age and has been a osteopenia patient past 3-4 years. Recently she was deducted with osteoporotic fractures on L1 and L2 spine which has lead to nerve compressions and sciatica pain. We started consulting our ortho initially due to this unique sciatica pain and finally diagnosed them using XRAY/MRI and CT scans as being caused due to the Lumbar spine fractures. Her current T-Score is around -1.5. She has been started on Foteo drug a month back to avoid further fractures. A unusual thing we are noticing with her after she started with Forteo is that she seem to just get sudden leg weakness to the extent that she falls down suddenly with no notice. Such things have never happened before and she is still an active person who does all her regular routines though bit curtailed by the nerve compression pains. Given her existing spinal deformations these falls are really scary as they might aggrevate the risk of fractures. We are very much worried if this weakness is a possible side effect of Forteo or something totally different. Is their someone facing similar effects or would be very much hapy to hear back on any advice from any med experts. Thanks in advance.

Hi Shaila Sailesh, welcome to the community.  The side effects listed for Forteo are: nausea, leg cramps, low blood pressure, dizziness and headaches.  This falling can be very problematic and you need to discuss it with your mothers Dr.  Since she has a fracture and nerve compression the weakness in her legs could be assosiated with that, but you'd need to find out by discussing it with her Dr.  See what the Dr thinks and if stopping the Forteo (under a Dr.s supervision) would possibly determine the cause of the leg weakness.  I would specifically ask if this nerve compression/sciatica could cause this sort of reaction with her legs.  Try to talk to the Dr. asap and find out what to do to prevent any future falls.

Good luck and let us know what you find out.
