Q: My health insurance company will no longer cover Fosamax. Please suggest an alternative medication. I believe there is no generic for Fosamax.

I am 64 years old and was diagnosed several years ago with osteoporosis. My mother, now deceased, suffered from severe osteoporosis. I understand this is generally genetic and thus my concern. Please advise me.

Hi jerland, welcome...Fosamax comes in generic; it's generic name is (Alendronate).  Your insurance should have told you that this comes in a generic equivalent.  All the other oral bisphosphonates, are still in Brand name only like: Actonel and Boniva, until the companies patent expires.  The next drug that will have a generic, should be Actonel, but the patent won't expire until April 2012.  Here's an article explaining the Patent expiration on Actonel.  Be sure to read about the availability of generic Actonel, once the patent expires since it takes some time for other companies to manufacture it.  Also, the date above is the "projected" patent expiration date, which could change due to many different factors, putting off the generic release to a later date.

If you have another question don't hesitate to post again.  Good luck and ask your pharmacy about generic Fosamax.  I also recommend reading about the drug so you'll know what the side effects and contraindications are.  Some people experience side effects and some don't, so do your homework to help with your Dr.'s advice.  All the bisphosphonates are now recommended for a period of 5 or less years.  This is due to the recent studies done on atypical femur fractures.  These fractures are still considered rare, but I would keep up on any new information on this in the future.
