Q: Dental surgery and Fosamex

I have just been diagnosed with osteoporosis in my lumbar and osteopenia in my hips and have been prescribed a generic fosamex.  I am due to have dental surgery in a month so my Dr told me to wait to take the drug until after the surgery.  She seemed unclear about how soon after the surgery I can start the drug, though.  How long after the surgery must I wait before I can finally starting taking the fosamex?

Hi JoyceB, it depends on how well you heal after the surgery, so ask the Dr and oral surgeon to let you know when you should restart the Fosamax.  The Dr/oral surgeon probably can't answer this question right now because there's no way to determine how fast you'll heal.  Good luck with the surgery and I hope you heal fast.  Just be sure to let the area heal before you start the med again, and have the surgeon evaluate this for you.

Good luck...
