Q: I worried that after taking Femara for 2 years my bone density went from -1 to -5.14. Is it Femara?

After having breast cancer and being on Tamoxifin for 5 years, my dr. put me on Femara for another 5 years. I had a bone density test just as I went on Femara with a -1 score. Now 2 yrs later, and another bone density test I have a -5.14 score which indicates severe osteoporosis. I am very concerned. I am 60 yrs old, normal weight, and in good health. My dr. is prescibing 70mg Fosamax once a week.

Hi want to know, welcome and thanks for your question.  So sorry to hear about your breast cancer and now the declining bone density.  According to Medline (Nat Institute of Health) femara may cause or worsen osteoporosis.  Unfortunately some drugs that work well for cancer treatment, may cause other problems.  If the femara helped with your cancer then that's great, but unfortunately there can be a trade off with these meds when they cause other problems.  I hope the Fosamax works for you and increases your t-scores.  Below is a link from Medline that explains this phenomenom with femara.

Good luck with the fosamax!!  Be sure to get calcium, vitamin D and weight bearing exercise with the fosamax.
