Hi Janice: I agree with Pam's remarks... Since you've had a frax, do you mind mentioning if you are taking pain meds? If you don't choose to that's fine, but know that they all cause constipation. When I've had these problems I used stool softeners, and I find that the OTC brands work just as well as an rx form. I don't advocate drinking coffee, but coffee cleans me out. There are stool softeners that are supositories and they can help as well. When you say you had a frax in your low back are you talking about your lumbar or sacrum? No need to be alarmed, but there are some things that can cause bowel probs if the sacrum nerves are involved. You probably just have a normal case of constipation, but if it goes on too long, ask your ortho or who ever treated your frax if CES could be the cause. CES is cauda equina syndrome (latin trans is horses tail-meaning tail bone.) Sometimes this can happen but it isn't common, but it is always something to watch since having urinary and bowel probs combined after a spinal injury *may* cause this. Have you tried eating some black licorice? Licorice is a good physic. There are also natural laxatives that only have herbs, plants and flowers in them that I use when I've gone too long between movements. Swiss Kriss if the name of the all herbal laxative, but-and this is very important-they aren't to be used more than a couple of times, even though it's a all natural product. They sell this at drug stores and health food stores.
Good luck and if urination becomes a problem *as well* notify your Dr, it's nothing to mess around with.
