Q: low bone density

how do you find that you have Osteoporosis?i consulted a doctor who told me i only have a bone density problem.what is the differance?in the last 2 years i broke some part of my body 4 times and still my doctor is diagonaises me with bone density.please help me to find my problem

Hi Pauline:  Osteoporosis is diagnosed using a dxa (DEXA) scan.  The scan will give you a total hip score and a total spine score.  Below are the scores and what they mean.

 

Normal bone density is any score better than -1.

Osteopenia is any score between -1. and -2.5

Osteoporosis is any score less than -2.5

 

If you've had this scan, then the Dr should give you a printout of your score.  This score will tell you if you have normal bone density, osteopenia (precursor to osteoporosis and not a disease) or osteoporosis.

 

If you can find out what your score was, providing you had a dxa, you'll know which area of bone density measurement you fall into.
