Q: fractured pelvis-no surgery or external stabilization. how will that heal when patient is not still?

elderly woman with multiple health problems and three fractures in pelvis due to fall.

no surgery or stabilization provided at all. being moved several times daily from bed to wheelchair and involved in some light physical therapy. I don't understand how this will heal if constantly moved? doesn't sitting upright put wieght onto the pelvis and potentially de stabilize the bone position during healing?

Hi concerned, welcome and thanks for the question.  I agree with you, there should be some kind of external stabilization when you have an unstable fracture.  Can you speak with the Dr. and ask what the reasoning is behind PT, sitting and moving if the patient has multiple fractures?  PT would be used at some point, for rehab, but I'm not sure how effective it will be when the patient has unhealed fractures.  I don't know what type of insurance this patient has, but have you looked into Forteo for the treatment of pelvic frax's.  Here's an article on it, that you can read.  The cost of this is expensive but if the patients insurance will pay it's worth it.

Good luck.
