Q: 80 years old with severe T scores (-4.3) for ten years and unable to tolerate medications

My mom is 80 years old and has scared her doctors for the past ten years with severe osteoporosis (Tscores of -4.3).  She has tried and given up on all the osteoporosis medications because they made her feel sick.  Her doctor is now recommending Forteo and my mom is very scared of possible side effects.  Fortunately, my mom has not experienced any bone fractures.  Because she has had no bone fractures since her diognosis 10 years ago, and her T scores haven't changed much in the last 10 years, she is very afraid to try Forteo.  Any recommendations?

Hi Mplsmom, welcome and thanks for your question.  Sorry to hear about your mom's low t-scores, but that's great she hasn't had a fracture.  I took Forteo and did really well on it and the injection is really simple, nothing like a regular injection that you might be familiar with.

However, if she just doesn't want to take it, have you tried or looked into Fosteum?  This is another option for treatment that has very few side effects *for most*.  I can't say that there are no side effects, because everything has side effects.

Here's an article I wrote on Fosteum, check it out and see what you think. Please read all the *comments* on this article as well, because there is a correction on one of the links regarding the clinical trial done on this.  The original link, in the article worked initially, but it was moved to a new location and I have that updated info in the last comment.

This supplement has: zinc, D3, and genistein (an isoflavone isolated from soy).  If she has any allergies to soy, then she wouldn't be able to take it, but it's worth looking into as an option.  Fosteum is only available through a Drs prescription, so her Dr. would have to agree to this or be familiar with it.

**We have other members here who took Forteo or are taking it now so hopefully they will join this discussion and tell you more in case your mom wants to re-think the option of Forteo.**

Good luck and if you have another question just post again.
