Q: joint and muscle pain requiring hospitalization from Boniva

I have a friend recently diagnosed with Osteoporosis. When she took her first Boniva tablet, within two hours she was having severe abdominal pain and severe muscle and joint pain. She was admitted to the hospital and was told she had a reaction to Boniva. She is home now, but still in pain and can only walk with a cane. She was quite active before this and did not need a cane. She is taking anti inflammatory medication and pain medication per her physician's orders. I am wondering how long before she gets back to her prior status before this reaction. Thanks.

Hi Nurse 2, welcome and thanks for your question.  I really feel for your friend who is having all these serious problems from Boniva.  I don't know anyone who had such a severe reaction like this so it's hard to say how long it will last.  On the Roche site, they mention the flu-like symptoms, and on those they say they should resolve within a few days to a week.

Has your friend asked the Dr. about this and has the hospital ever seen a reaction like this?  You could call Roche, the manufacturer, but chances are they'll probably just refer you back to the Dr. but it's worth a shot anyway.

Here's the link for them if you want to contact them and discuss it.  I hope your friend gets better soon, and that this reaction doesn't last too long.

Good luck...

My sister has have very disturbing bone aches from taking boniva for the first time.  pain in sternum, then moving to hips, spine... what antidotes are suggested to try to conteract the drug's effect?  there is nothing definitive written about a course of medication and advil doesn't quite remove all the Pain.
