Q: Is it safe to take Alendronate from India

fosamax is so expensive and my husband found a company in Canada that said the drug would be sent from the UK.  Now it is coming from India.  Now a drug came from there..in generic form.  Is it safe?

Thanks very much for the question. Are you aware that Fosamax is already available in generic form? For more details, read this post: Generic Fosamax - Osteoporosis Drug Fosamax Goes Off Patent.

Overall, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about specific medications, as they will know better about safe, reputable sources. Some mainstream coverage of generic drugs produced in India (Time, PBS, British Medical Journal) has focused on patent and turf concerns for big pharmaceutical companies. Information on drug safety is harder to find.

Since feb 2009 I have been taking Fosamax made by CIPLA in India, 70 mg. It has worked very well for me. I suffer from very severe Osteoprosis.

Even though I was supposed to take Fosavance per my doctor, ((Fosavance is Fosamax combined with Vitamin D)), I took Fosamax alone and it has worked very well for me and my doctor was surprised to learn aabout the origin of my medicine. I am about to receive my 2nd shipment now.

I do not know where to buy online, but I get mine from friends who are visiting India.  My advice would be to make sure you are getting from a reliable source even if it is slightly extra.  The cost in India is about 10% of what we pay here.
