Q: Can Forteo CAUSE bone spurs?

I've been one it about two weeks, and I have three bone spurs in my foot.  I have never before had a bone spur.  I am 32 and do not want to mess up my feet for life, but my T-Score is 3.3, so trying to weigh the risks of taking it versus not taking it.  My urine is very alkaline and has been for awhile (with no explanation).

Hi BadToTheBone, welcome and thanks for your question. I'm not aware of Forteo causing bone spurs. Here's an article from the Cleveland Clinic that explains Forteo which you can read to see if bone spurs are mentioned, but I don't recall ever reading that. http://www.ccjm.org/content/70/7/585.full.pdf+html?sid=9e07cee4-b325-4378-af70-e4b2c0b570f2 You'll have to copy and past the above link since it looks like our insert hyperlink feature isn't working right now. Osteoporosis can cause some bone spurs, so this may be occuring from this, but you would need to discuss it with your Dr. to confirm. Be sure to get the recommended amounts of calcium (1,200 mgs for those over 50) and (1,000 mgs for those under 50). Some studies suggest that a low calcium level in your body *could* cause bone spurs, so ask your Dr. about this as well. Good luck finding out about this. If you have another question just post again. Reply

Hi again, I'm trying to fix the problems in the above answer so it's easier to read:

Hi, Your very welcome and thanks for joining us!!  I just wanted to mention that I took Forteo for 2 years and did exceedly well on it, and didn't have any side effects.  However, even though I didn't have side effects, this doesn't mean that they don't occur for some.  My scores went from severe osteo to normal (spine) and osteopenia (hip) after the 2 years of Forteo, and now I'm on Evista.

To clarify about bone spurs and osteoporosis, I'm not sure that osteoporosis actually causes bone spurs, but there is a direct correlation between low bone mass and the occurence of bone spurs; plus you have the added calcium connection for both as well since low calcium can make both of these situations worse and cause the bone to weaken (loose mass) in the first place.

Good luck with your treatment!!

I am wondering about this myself. my 50 year old husband has been on Forteo for 5 months and has grown bone spurs on both feet. He can hardly wlak with the pain. Our doctors from Brigham and Women's don't see any correlation but I have to wonder. Anybody else out there on Forteo want to weigh in? The medication stimulates bone growth so it would not be unusual for it to be causing the spurs to grow...

BadtoTheBone, Your questions is a really good one that I never thought of. I do have several bone spurs in different body parts but had some of these before taking Forteo. I kind of doubt a bone spur could grow in 3 weeks but I'm not a doctor so I'd ask your doctor. Lots of people get bone spurs that never taking Forteo also. Reply

i took fortero while it was in the trial phases.. At that time is was perscribed for 1 year use.. I went from Osteopena to full blown osteoporosis.. I am now 4 yrs post fortero and have bone spurs ( most troubling on shoulder, frequent rotator cuff tears and change in range of motion) .. I am unable to take other osteo meds for 1. fear of long term side effects 2. pain and difficulty moving after dose.. I have been reading and noticed a definite co relation between long term anti depressents and osteoporosis.. interesting read.. I am now looking into "natural" ways to build bone density, since the bone is continually renewing itself , I am hoping, lifestyle changes, suppliments will at least bring me back to osteopina.. Good luck all
