Hi Kathy:  I took Forteo for 2 years and did very well on it.  My calcium levels went slightly above normal range, but I decided to continue with the medication anyway.

Forteo will raise your calcium and vitamin D 1,25 and lower your vitamin D 25.

If your Dr feels that your increase in calcium is good, you must still be within the normal range.

The thing that Drs watch for is elevated calcium (above normal) with Forteo, so as long as your scores are elevated from baseline (original test score) but *still* in normal range that *is* good.

Good luck, and I hope you do as well as I did....

Hi Kathy:  I forgot to mention something that may be of interest to you.  Here is a link from the Cleveland Clinic on Forteo, that is excellent.  In the article it explains how Forteo *may* raise calcium levels, as I mentioned.  This article also answers just about any question you might have on Forteo and it gives a good easy-to-understand explanation on how it works.

If you still have your package insert that comes with the Forteo pen, you can also read about what I mentioned in the other post on how Forteo increases calcium, vitamin D 1,25 and lowers vitamin D 25 by 19% in some individuals.

When my calcium went above normal, my Dr started to check my calcium and D levels on a regular basis, just to make sure it didn't go too high. My highest score was 11.8, so we monitored it frequently.

If you have your lab print out for these tests, you can look at your score for calcium.  All labs vary on their normal range for this test by a few 10ths of a point, but my lab list normal cal at any number between 8.5 and 10.5 for a total serum cal test.  Since my calcium went above the higher number we needed to watch it.  When I finished Forteo, my calcium went back down to normal.  My experience is rare, so I'm glad your score is normal, which it sounds like it is because your Dr sounds encouraged by the increase.

My dxa scores went from severe osteo to normal bmd and slight osteopenia with the Forteo, so that was fantastic.  I hope you aren't having any side effects, the only ones I had were greatly improved dxa scores and the elevated calcium/D 1,25 and low D 25.

Good Luck...
