I had the reclast infusion yesterday. My bones hurt tremendously , especially my arthritic hands.

I can't even hold a coffee cup or type, my husband is doing this for me.  I have difficulty even pulling up my pants.  Does the drug infuse bones and possibly calcium deposits such as arthritic areas?

Hi Debbie,

I would recommend contacting your doctor about the pain you are experiencing. The FDA put this information out in January about the use of bisphosphonates, the class of drugs to which Reclast belongs. Bisphosphonates have been reported to cause severe pain, as well as some flu-like symptoms (chills, fever, pains). The symptoms may show up within days to years after starting the medication, and can resolve shortly after discontinuation. In some patients, however, the symptoms resolve slowly or may not resolve completely. I hope this helps.

Best of luck,

Casey

Hi Paula, welcome and thanks for sharing your information.  I'm sorry you are having so much trouble with the side effects from Reclast, hopefully other members will join us and offer some assistance or information.

Have you contacted the FDA on this?  You can report serious side effects to them through their "Adverse Events Reporting Service (AERS).  Here's the link to it: http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/GuidanceComplianceRegulatoryInformation/Surveillance/AdverseDrugEffects/default.htm

Also, there is a blood or urine test that can be ordered that will tell your Dr. how much medication is still in your body.  I'm not sure that this would help you, but it could give you some idea of how long the medication will stay in your body if you had several of these tests and did a comparison to each one.

The name of the test is 24 hour urine N-telopeptide.  I don't know if your insurance will pay for this, but you could look into it.  Many insurance companies pay for this test, but some don't so ask your Dr. if it's something worth considering. Here's an article I wrote on this topic if you'd like to read more about this test and others that are available for measuring bone markers in blood and urine.

You might get more responses if this was posted as a new question here, or in a SharePost which you can write here.

Good luck and let us know how you are doing, and I surely hope something can be done about the pain.Smile
