Hip fractures may not be related to sedative use in the elderly, a new study says. In 1989, Medicare Part D began restricting benzodiazepine prescriptions, because policymakers believed that side effects and abuse of this type of sedative led to dangerous hip fractures in people 65 and older. But researchers looked at the rate of fractures before and after 1989 and found that there was no difference. Read more »
