Early identification of bone thinning could cut Americans' fracture risk

Experts say that many doctors mistakenly believe that nothing can be done to prevent or treat osteoporosis, but a new study suggests that is not true. Researchers in California identified 620,000 health insurance members who were eligible to have their bone mineral density checked. Those whose scans showed very thin bones were then offered an osteoporosis education program. Researchers found that this focus on preventive measures increased the number of people who were on osteoporosis medications, and it also reduced the number of hip fractures by 25 percent.
