A new report says that Americans spend too much time indoors, and use too much high-protection sunscreen, and this is leading to a vitamin D deficiency. Researchers at Harvard and the University of Colorado found that the number of people who get adequate amounts of vitamin D fell by half between 2001 to 2004 compared to the previous decade. And experts say that while sunscreen and time indoors can protect against skin cancer, a vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteoporosis, fractures, heart disease, and some cancers. They suggest that people have their blood levels tested and consider taking a vitamin supplement if their levels are too low.
