New osteoporosis med shown to reduce fractures in men, women

According to two new studies, a twice-yearly jab with the osteoporosis Prolia (denosumab) may reduce spinal and hip fractures. The studies, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, included data on 8,000 post-menopausal women, as well as 900 men who had bone thinning due to prostate cancer treatment. Researchers found that the risk of hip fracture was cut by 40 percent, with a 20 percent reduction in risk of other broken bones in women, while men on the drug increased their bone mass by 5.6 percent.
