Calcium Can Be Harmful in Excess

Calcium is known to be good for bones, but it is possible to take too much, experts say. A condition called milk-alkali syndrome was identified in the early 1900s when ulcer sufferers consumed too much calcium in an effort to ease gastric problems. Beginning in the 1990s the syndrome reappeared, thanks to information linking calcium and bone health. Now researchers say older patients who take calcium for bone health should be careful not to take more than 1.2 to 1.5 grams per day.
