Task Force Recommends Bone Density Tests for More Women

A government task force is recommending that women at high risk for osteoporosis should be given a bone density test starting at age 60, rather than waiting until age 65. Factors that would put a woman into the high-risk category include low body weight, a family history of hip fractures, smoking, and some medication use. For the first time, the task force also debated whether men should be regularly screened for osteoporosis, but they said further research was needed on whether primary prevention was helpful.
