Nitroglycerin Ointment May Prevent, Treat Bone Loss

Nitroglycerin, the drug commonly prescribed to treat chest pain, may also prevent bone loss, a new study suggests. The study of 243 postmenopausal women found that those who took a nightly dose of nitroglycerin ointment on their upper arm had a 6.7 percent increase in bone density, a 6.2 percent increase in the hip, and a 7 percent increase at the top of the thigh bone compared to women who took a placebo. Experts say the results of the study are promising, particularly since it is an established medication that is more cost effective than many other bone meds.
