Can Zoloft Cause Weight Gain, Agitation And High Cholesterol?

Posting Date: 12/11/2000

Q: My husband has been taking Zoloft and has experienced agitation, increased cholesterol levels, weight gain and manic behavior. His doctor says side effects are rare with this drug and doesn't want to prescribe anything else.

I would appreciate any information you could send me about this antidepressant and its side effects. Also, any information about St. John's wort would be welcome.

A: Antidepressants such as Zoloft, Prozac and Paxil can make some people agitated or even a bit manic. Weight gain and elevated cholesterol are other potential reactions.

Even rare side effects cause real problems for the people who experience them. Since your husband seems to be susceptible, he may need a different treatment.

Our Guides to Antidepressant Pros & Cons and St. John's Wort give more details about side effects and other treatments.

St. John's wort has been tested in scientific studies and shown to be roughly equal to prescribed antidepressants for mild to moderate depression. Side effects are less common but interactions with other medications may be troublesome.
