Curing Stomach Bug Crucial To Prevent Cancer

New research shows that H. pylori can have even more serious consequences than heartburn or ulcers. Japanese researchers reported in the New England Journal of Medicine (Sept. 13, 2001) that "Gastric cancer develops in persons infected with H. pylori but not in uninfected persons." They also found that people treated for H. pylori did not develop stomach cancer.

It's time for physicians and patients to take a "search and treat" approach to this problem. An editorial commenting on the Japanese research concluded, "the association between H. pylori infection and gastric cancer ranks with the association between smoking and lung cancer."
