Health News Update # 518

Posting Date: 10/30/2004

The health effects of cell phones have been controversial, with most

studies showing no serious problems. Swedish researchers have found,

however, that long-term cell-phone users have a higher risk for a rare

problem affecting the auditory nerve.

Research has shown many benefits to the Mediterranean diet. How can you

try this at home?

Another controversial topic is whether moderate alcohol consumption

can improve health. Italian researchers say yes--but only when the

alcohol is part of a meal. Between meal drinking doesn't help and may

be harmful.

We also take listener calls on prescription medicines,

over-the-counter drugs, dietary supplements and home remedies.

Guests: David Savitz, PhD, professor and Chair of Epidemiology in the

School of Public Health of the University of North Carolina at Chapel

Hill. He is an editor of Epidemiology and is a member of the Lineberger

Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Marian Burros, food columnist for the New York Times and best-selling

cookbook author.
