the effects of partying like a rockstar

it's funny. when i first logged into this site months ago, i stated i had recovered from bipolar disorder. and i honestly thought i had. but i'm not wondering whether you can ever really recover from bipolar disorder. i'm not meaning to be cynical; it's just that bipolar is inherently a cyclical illness. our moods (and with them our perceptions, beliefs, emotions, thoughts, and behaviors) cycle from the manic peak highs to...

szasz-isms

i had a classmate (and now colleague) who stated he wanted to work in mental health and then quoted dr thomas szasz.

in my mind, at least, he was immediately discredited. dr thomas szasz is the one who was quoted so well by tom cruise when tom cruise "got into it" with matt lauer on the today show.

thomas szasz is the "doctor" who stated there is no such thing as mental illness and that schizophrenia is a "fake" illness....

incognito

so here's the thing: i'm living incognito. i'm an msw therapist at a community behavioral health center who is very bipolar (although in full remission pretty much (!!)), and who has not disclosed this to anyone at work.

it's kind of funny, really. when i do group therapy and we'll talk about medication management. there's only so much med management you can learn from books. or take the mood disorder group....
