I have been getting classic migraines w/aura since I was about seven years old. I was also recently diagnosed with common migraines (w/out aura) after complaining of 'sinus' headaches for the past several years.
I have a strong family history of migraines (both maternal & paternal). So far, only one of my three children is taking after me. My middle son was diagnosed in 2009 with migraines w/out aura (frontal headaches with light & noise sensitivity and nausea) after suffering with headaches for several years.
I do not take any prescription medications at the moment. I tried Midrin-R when I was in high school and it prolonged the aura stage of my migraines by hours and even days and didn't seem to thwart them at all, so I'm very skeptical of migraine specific medications. I treat with OTC painkillers and am lucky enough to be able to lie down whenever I feel an attack coming on.
