I worked in medical research for fifteen years, studying healthcare outcomes for diseases like congestive heart failure and diabetes, before deciding to return to graduate school to complete my PhD in History of Medicine. My research focuses on the social understanding of illness. Currently, I have been examining changes in the public perception of diabetes in general and, more specifically, of gestational diabetes. I have Type 1 diabetes and I also had a career as a professional athlete for over ten years, qualifying for Olympic Marathon Trials and earning several national and world rankings.
