My name is Sysy Morales (Sysy pronounced like two letter C's). I've been a type 1 diabetic since age 11. For a little over 10 years I very much struggled with accepting and managing my diabetes. I suffered from depression and anxiety and plain old diabetes burn out.
Eventually, I started changing my negative thoughts into positive ones and I changed some lifestyle habits. Suddenly, armed with this new and improved attitude about my life with diabetes, I was able to lower my A1c to below a 6%.
Diabetes is still the challenge it always was except now I feel more motivated and empowered to do what I have to in order to take care of myself.
I didn't think it was possible but in 2009 I gave birth to twin babies, proving to myself once and for all that I need not lose hope in my health.
The second my children were born I decided to share my long journey with others so I started a blog called http://thegirlsguidetodiabetes.com and since have worked as a diabetes advocate and health activist.
Since diabetes is 24/7, the mental and emotional toll is great. Yet, we can always inch our way towards improvement. I hope to continue learning from such a brave community and to help encourage others to make the most of their life with diabetes by accepting it and meeting it head on.
