Coach Dave’s athletic background is scattered with the occasional triumph and replete with the frequent loss. As a slightly above-average but very stubborn athlete, he has experienced all of the elation and exhilaration – as well as anxiety and disappointment – that accompany any athletic career. A graduate of Georgetown University, Weiss was a four-year rower and team captain and MVP of the Hoyas’ Crew his senior year. After graduating, Coach Dave began his coaching career, first at the high school level and now as assistant coach of the Men’s Rowing team at The George Washington University.
So, Coach Dave, what can you do for me?
Like anyone with even the most modest interest in sports, I have been awed at many points in my athletic career by the remarkable natural athleticism of a few exceptionally gifted athletes. However, it is the remarkable people whom I have raced with and coached who have accomplished the most for themselves and for their teams, and who unceasingly remind me of what is possible when we summon the courage to embrace an athletic challenge of any kind. As I often tell my teams, there are always better athletes out there – probably even on their own campus. What makes what they’re doing exceptional, however, is their willingness to confront tremendous challenges and, in so doing, give themselves an invaluable and permanent gift.
What I aim to accomplish is to identify both common pitfalls and indispensable keys to success that determine the extent to which we achieve our fitness goals. In so doing, I hope that you realize that, regardless of the loftiness of your fitness goals or the level of your athletic ability, you too can give yourself an invaluable gift through exercise – if you are willing to embrace the challenges that an exercise regimen offers.
