In 1958 I was misdiagnosed when I became ill [in England my birth place] the doctor gave me medicines that actually were killing me .. one day I was got so ill my mum rushed me to the doctors office again .. he was not there.. but a young doctor was in his place .. he immediately knew what was wrong and had an ambulance come pick me up pronto. My blood glucose was so high they told my parents I may only survive one more day. I fooled them.. was in 2 different hospitals for 2 months and taught how to give injections [with an orange] how much and when to give myself them. My parents were then told that I 'could' live 20 perhaps 25 years with juvenile-diabetes... that I should never marry as I should never ever get pregnant. I realized life would be somewhat short and decided I had better hurry and do what I wanted in my life before I reached 40!! I wanted to experience life in other countries and tossed a coin .. Australia or America.. the USA won and 6 weeks after my legal age of 21 I emigrated to America alone. I shudder now when I think of that decision in the early 60's!! I am married have 2 daughters and 4 grandchilden. I volunteer at a local Joslin Diabetes Center.. where I am a patient too.
Life is so good.
