Still in remission...

My last post was in June, and I am happy to say I have still had no migraines since I stopped taking birth control pills in April. I used 'remission' in my title because I don't know what menopause will bring. I turn 50 in March, so it shouldn't be too much longer for the 'change' to start. Will that change bring more migraines? Time will tell. In the meantime, I still want to hear from everyone about how they are doing, and keep up on all the...

Cured...sort of....???

My last migraine was when I travelled on business to Arizona in late April. I had two, presumably due to the physical stress of travel and the very dry air. I drank tons of water, but that did not stop me from drying out. At my annual well-woman exam in April, I talked with my doctor about migraines and the Pill, that I would like to stop taking it for a few months to see how my period behaved. The main reason I have been on the Pill is to...

Getting along well...

I have been lax about sharing my experiences lately. Holiday buziness took over, I guess. I've been reading all my emails and posts with interest, though. I've learned so much through this site, to the point that I can answer my doctor's questions. He's a good guy and wants to learn more. He only has two other patients with migraine, but I will keep him. He listens and believes what I tell him. I'm happy to say I have...

Six migraines

Well, so much for acupuncture. I had an appointment on Oct 18, but the doctor said I could cancel it if I did not get a migraine. So, I canceled it on the morning of Oct 18. On the afternoons of Oct 19 and 20, I had migraines. It was at the end of my period, which was a normal time to experience them, so I thought that the hormones were too strong to fight. That weekend, my integrity as a skipper was questioned in the sailing community, which...

Still no migraine...

Still no migraine since September 15 - almost a month. I have an appointment with my acupuncturist on Thursday, but he said to cancel if I do not get a migraine. I have participated in two races and did race committee for a race yesterday, all in the hot sun and physically challenging. Still, no migraine. Since I have been getting them at the rate of 4 - 5 a month for the last year or so, that is pretty freaking amazing. The real test will be...

Acupuncture

My first acupuncture treatment was on September 14, my last two migraines were on September 14 and 15. At my second treatment last week, the doctor seemed excited that I got a migraine after treatment - that meant he found the correct energy meridian. I still think it could be a coincidence, but it remains to be seen. However, I did not get a migraine after our sailboat race on Sunday September 16. I've gotten a migraine after every race in...

Two more migraines

I've now reached my average number of migraines for the month: 4. I started acupuncture treatments on Friday (Sep 14) morning at 9:30. I was also at the end of my period. Five hours after the acupuncture treatment at 2:30, I felt the familiar pressure on the back of my left eye. It was low-grade enough to remain productive at work, go home and have dinner, read the paper, and watch TV. I was even able to go to sleep. I should have taken an...

Learning

I joined this site less than a week ago, and I have learned so much already. I'm still on the fence about Topamax because some people report doing well, but others say they had to quit after several months. I learned that I may get migraines after sailboat races because some of my triggers might be heat and bright sun. I have a race this Sunday - I'll find out. I have yet to find someone who has tried acupuncture, so I'll be a guinea...

Cramping my Style

I went to the hospital with my first migraine, convinced that I had a brain tumor. After a CAT-scan showing a healthy brain, none of the doctors could diagnose the problem. The whites of my left eye were completely red - I looked like a hellish lizard - so the attending physician had me go to an opthamologist. After testing for acute glaucoma and finding nothing but a healthy eye, she was convinced that I had suffered a migraine. Prior to the...
