I will be your Community Leader and guide to Health Central's skin care and skin cancer sites.

In 2008 I began my journey with Health Central as a patient expert and community leader for several of our health communities. I began my freelance writing career in the blog world, writing about my personal experiences as both a patient and a caregiver. My first major publication was the first chapter in a book geared for therapists and educators called Embracing Autism.

My educational and occupational background is in health care. After finishing my Master's degree in Special Education I worked for one of the major health care employers in Pittsburgh, PA as a behavioral specialist. During this time I went on to take classes and participate in internships for the purpose of getting my second Master's degree in Social Work. I am ten credits shy of obtaining my second degree.

I have a personal interest in skin care and skin cancer as both a patient and a caregiver. I have been diagnosed with and have been treated for rosacea and chronic adult acne. The general public may have the perception that these skin conditions are a cosmetic concern only. But for those of us who suffer from any type of chronic skin condition, we know that skin diseases can affect not only our physical health but our mental health as well. I am also a patient who is more at risk for skin cancer due to my skin type and genetics. I have had several pre-cancerous moles removed and must be dilligent about skin cancer prevention.

As a caregiver I have a son who battles chronic eczema which still persists into his teens. So I understand how frustrating such chronic skin conditions can be for the individual and for the parent, family member, or caregiver. I have family members who have gone through Mohs surgery to treat basal cell carcinoma and my husband has had the experience being surgically treated for melanoma in situ (the earliest stage of melanoma skin cancer).

In addition to my personal and caregiving experiences I also call upon the expertise of our consulting dermatologist, Dr. Lawrence Green, a practicing dermatologist and Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the George Washington University School of Medicine. Once a week I select a member question to be answered by Dr. Green as part of the content you will see on both our skin care and skin cancer sites.

As a health writer I have researched and written articles about a wide variety of health topics for Health Central including skin care, skin cancer, depression, anxiety, autism, learning disabilities, ADHD, Multiple Sclerosis, and sexual health.

I am currently the community leader for our skin cancer, skin care, depression, and sexual health sites.

If you have any questions about our skin care or skin cancer communities please don't hesistate to ask. We are here to serve you!
