As the Founder of FoodFit.com, Ellen Haas is responsible for the overall management of the award-winning website. Haas oversees the FoodFit staff and has been instrumental to the continuing growth of the business and its health-conscious audience. With her expertise, commitment and direction, the FoodFit team has built a platform of outstanding unique content, products and services. She also has led the team's efforts to bring together nationally recognized experts in nutrition, health and fitness as wee as a network of 100 leading chefs.
Prior to founding FoodFit in 1999, Haas served as the Undersecretary of Agriculture for Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services (1993-1997), appointed by President Bill Clinton to head the nation's nutrition and food programs. During her tenure, Haas was responsible for the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. She is widely recognized for the reform of the National School Lunch Program, providing children with healthier meals. Haas also developed the Team Nutrition campaign, which engaged 200 food and health companies and organizations to support the school lunch reforms and educate children about healthy food choices.
A five-time president of Consumer Federation of America, Haas founded and served from 1981-1993 as executive director of Public Voice for Food and Health Policy, a national advocacy organization that played an important role in successful efforts to improve food labeling, seafood safety and beef grading She is the author of two healthy food cookbooks: Great Adventures in food: Fresh Ways to Celebrate Every Meal (St. Martin's 1999) and Fit Food: Eating Well for Life (Hatherleigh Press, 2005). She also served on the Editorial Board of The Ecnyclopedia of Food and Culture (Scribner's, 2003).
Haas has served on numerous boards and councils. She is a current member of the Advisory Board of the Food Industry Center, University of Minnesota, and the Private and Public Scientific, Academic and Consumer Food Policy Committee, Harvard Business School. She has been the subject of numerous newspaper features, and recent profiles of Haas and her leadership at FoodFit have appeared in the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and on National Public Radio.
Her award include the American Health Foundation's Lifetime Award, American Heart Association's Public Affairs Award and Parenting Magazine's Parenting Achievement Award. Most recently, her entrepreneurial leadership was recognized by the Springboard 2000 Mid-Atlantic Forum, and Mindshare, Class of 2001 of the Greater Metropolitan Washington Region.
