worried !!

My boyfrind has cronic back pain and is taking vicodin. He has taken this medication for at least 3 years, what long term affect does it have on your body and how do I talk with him about the dangers of this medication. I know he is addicted because he has severe mood swings and panics when he is almost out. He visits his Dr. at least 3 times a month. What other medications are out there for cronic back pain? Help!!!!!!!
