helping my granddaughter

I live with my daughter, who is bipolar. When my daughter gets into a tantrum about nothing much and says mean things, I tell my granddaughter that the mean words don't mean anything real and she should not take them to heart. I tell her they are just anger noises.
I also point out that whatever set off the tantrum isn't worth all that much anger.
Am I doing right?
