ABOUT ME:

I was a smoker for more than 25 years and tried to quit literally hundreds of times before finding long-term success. Having started smoking and drinking alcohol as a teenager, I found confidence and solace in these “acceptable” drugs. I soon discovered severe dependency as well. My first attempt to quit smoking was at age 18 when I joined a stop-smoking group at work. That attempt lasted about one week.

I soon realized that my smoking addiction was very much tied to my addiction to alcohol and since I wasn’t yet ready to stop drinking, I couldn’t stop smoking either. Then I got a DWI, which led me to finally come to grips with my alcoholism. With my husband’s loving support and the help of some wonderful women in a 12-step program, I was able to quit drinking. Quitting smoking would prove to be much tougher.

After becoming sober, it took another five years of regular attempts to quit smoking for that habit to break its terrible hold over me. I can now say that I have been alcohol-free for almost 12 years and cigarette-free for seven of those years. And it feels great to be free!

I wrote the book "Give It Up! Stop smoking for life" as I was quitting smoking for the last time. I know the process of researching that book and speaking to the people who ended up sharing their stories on the audio CD were powerful influencers in my ability to be a successful quitter. I love being able to write for this blog so that I might have an opportunity to be a positive influence for others who also want to be successful quitters.
