ABOUT ME:

I am 24 years old and was Diagnosed with RA 6 months ago.I am a nurse for a Gastroenterologist in Macon,Ga. I went for my annual physical with my PCP and told him about my joints being very stiff and swollen in the mornings(espicially my hands) the swelling a stiffness was so bad it got to the point where I would have to run warm water over my hands in the morning to even move them.He ran the routine labs for RA....ANA,Rheumatoid factor,Sed rate, etc. and everything was normal except my positive ANA. He then sent me to a Rheumatologist and at this point I was scared to death because my mothers twin sister recently passed away from Lupus and she had RA. My rheumy told me I defintley have seronegative RA and not lupus so that was a relief. She started me on Plaquenil and Diclofenac and Prednisone. I saw minimal relief and returned to see her a few weeks later and then she added Methotrexate I was taking 10mg per week and began to see good results but then I had to stop the MTX and Diclofenac because I started having severe abdominal pain and nausea and vomiting. Come to find out this was all related to my gallbladder which I actually has removed today. I have an appointment with my Rheumy this week to get my medication adjusted right and we have decided the best thing to do is to start on MTX injections. I am hoping I will continue to have good results and not develop any side effects. Being 24 years old and a nurse myself this has been a scary and depressing situation, I am learning to live with the disease and hoping I can get the right"cocktail"of meds soon and stop the disease process. I have already had a spinal fusion 4 years ago and at the time did not know why my joints were wearing away at such a young age, at the time I was very active so we did not know if this was due to an injury or chronic disease and now RA explains everything. I am open to any idea' and support to help me begin my long journey!
