ABOUT ME:

Michael E. Makover, MD is a Board Certified professor of medicine at New York University School of Medicine, a member of the rheumatology division, an attending at the NYU Medical Center and a consultant to The Hospital for Joint Disease. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Honors Program at New York University College of Arts and Sciences. Prior to NYU, he was a professor of medicine and public health at Cornell Medical School. He is in active practice of internal medicine, rheumatology and preventive medicine in New York City. Dr. Makover’s education includes The Johns Hopkins University (BA with Honors and Phi Beta Kappa) and the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. His training includes the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and rheumatology fellowships at The Hospital of Special Surgery (Cornell) in New York City and at Moffitt Hospital at the University of California, San Francisco. His career spans more than four decades. He is the author of numerous articles on health care process and economics and heart disease prevention. His article on Lyme disease for New York Magazine in 1989 was one of the first to bring that important disease to public attention. His book, Mismanaged Care (Prometheus Books 1999) discusses what a good doctor should be and how economic and other factors are making it more difficult to practice high quality, ethical medicine. His Honors Seminar at NYU, called The Doctor’s Dilemma: To Be Both Correct and Right, concentrates on helping students develop effective thinking strategies by examining medical ethics and the process of being a doctor. He was an aid to Senator Robert Kennedy and has consulted for many corporations, financial institutions and law firms. He was a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society in New York City and led their anti-smoking efforts from 1978 to 1984. He has worked with the American Heart Association and the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness. He has run a major medical clinic and has developed innovative prevention programs. Dr. Makover is a co-founder of a new corporation that has developed medical devices that will revolutionize taking EKGs and other vital signs and will also create telehealth programs using those devices. Dr. Makover lives in New York, is married and has two children, one in college and one in law school. His wife is an Occupational Therapist, specializing in children with autism and related disorders. His main interest outside of medicine, besides family, is writing. He has recently completed a novel and is developing a new book on how we can now live far longer and healthier than anyone has previously realized.
