What Prebiotics and Probiotics Have to Do With Diabetes

Researchers have been studying the benefits of the microbes in our digestive tract for decades. I think most of us have heard about the benefits of taking a probiotic, and let’s not forget all the yogurt ads that tout the benefits that their product carries.

But probiotics and prebiotics have now come to light as something that may play into the development of type 1 diabetes.

The probiotic evidence is that the flora...

Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology: Why You Need One and Where You Can Find One

In the US, almost two million people will hear “you have diabetes,” this year. A vast majority will hear it from their primary care physician, but a few with more complicated cases of diabetes, or in most cases of type 1 diabetes, will be referred to an endocrinologist and certified diabetes educator.

The first time I went to see my endocrinologist, I noticed her tagline: MD, FACE. I had no idea what those letters after...

Two Glucose Meters Recalled for Incorrect “High” Blood Glucose Readings

Two different companies released a new type of meter and within weeks of each other, had to recall them for problems involving high blood sugar readings.
On March 25, 2013 One Touch VerioIQ glucose meter was recalled when it was discovered that blood sugars above 1000 would automatically shut down the meter. (On a personal note, if my blood glucose were anywhere near 1,000, I too would shut down/pass out).

Then, two days ago, Abbott...

Managing Diabetes During a Race: How the Mind and Body Work Together

Last fall, my body started to tell me that "all work and no workout" was not working. I had so much physical pain from frozen shoulder that I needed prescription strength Motrin during the day, and at night I took another muscle relaxer to sleep. In December, I bought a treadmill and made a commitment to balance exercise and work and so I stepped away from non-essential tasks.

As part of my chance to reclaim my fitness, I signed up...

Diabetes Research Institute's BioHub: The End-All-Be-All for Diabetes?

Yesterday, buzz stirred within the diabetes online community that there was a surprise coming from the Diabetes Research Institute. To add to the curiosity, Tom Karlya wrote a blog titled “This Could Be It…. What We Have Been Waiting for Since Diagnosis?." With that, I then surfed over to Diabetes Research Institute’s site, and it was down and said come back tomorrow. As someone who lives with diabetes,...

Perimenopause and Diabetes

Hot flashes and night sweats are the two hallmark symptoms of perimenopause. They also happen to be the hallmark symptoms of low blood sugar for someone with type 1 diabetes. When the wind begins to blow and change is in air, what’s a girl to do? Know as much as possible about the course, as you head into the winds of change!

Untangling the Dysfunction in Insurance Coverage

Patients feel that health care should be altruistic, but doctors and hospitals need to run a business. These are vastly different opinions, so what’s the solution?

As patients, we pay into a dysfunctional system. The health insurance business is about risk management and so how much will they cover for someone with a chronic condition? Apparently less and less each year regardless of health care reform. Insurance has bartered deals...

Your health care is always a work in progress. Wouldn’t you agree? And every time I hear about someone going to see their doctor, for a regular scheduled appointment to have a physical or an annual, and they are completely confident they get the best care, from the best doctor, in the best hospital, I am envious, and then I feel dubious that they know what they are talking about.

Could they really have it all? Because I...
