Androgel great ! / PSA goes to 4.1/ Cancer found

kjb101 Community Member November 09, 2007
  •   I am 54 years old and had low testosterone levels , viagra and others would give me headaches and backaches the next day, my urologist put me on Androgel with excellent results PSA 3.4 . The following yearly check-up found my PSA at 4.1. After being Biopsied 2 out of 10 were found to have 20% class 3 +3 cells. Now Im being told I need my prostate removed. Is this being to aggressive? I have stopped useing the gel and would like to do watchful waiting ( cancer not outside the prostate). I am taking a extract for the prostate ( I know this wont cure it but hopefully keep it dormaint) I have no other urinary problems . I feel the gel did not create the cancer but may have fed it after reading other articles. Any comments, views, or clinics on this will be appreciated.

    Hi kjb101,

I found some information on the site that you might find helpful. There are resident experts who have written articles that might help you. Remember though, this information should not take the place of a doctor's advice. Only you and your doctor know what is best for you and your health. This might give you some insight to be able to ask the rights questions when you see your doctor.

There is a very good article written by the Harvard Health Publications

that specifically address whether or not older men are at risk for cancer if they use Androgel replacements. You can read the entire article here.

Basically, " most experts do not recommend the use of testosterone replacement with drugs like AndroGel unless the man has very low levels or is symptomatic. " It sounds like your levels were low enough to concern your physician.

There is some very good information located here in the cancer treatment section. Speak with your doctor, but from what I have read, removal might be a bit premature. There are tests to determine the severity of the cancer here. There is also a very good question and answer section here.

I hope you find some of this information helpful. Don't hesitate to post a question, or if you want to vent because you have had a particularly challenging day or if you want to share something that works for you. There are lots of folks in the same position as you and the more information shared, the better for all.

Take care and stay in touch, let us know how you are doing!

I appear to be in the same boat, friend.  Having bioposy this week.  I need the Androgel, but am very concerned it levated the PSA and most likely big trouble.  I'm a 60 year-old man to good shape.  I'll let you know the outcome.
