PSA After Combined Hormone Therapy

By Robertb EZ, Health Guide Thursday, March 03, 2011
On (or about) March 10, I will be going for a new PSA test. This is going to be very important as it is the first such test AFTER I started Combined Hormone Therapy treatment for my prostate cancer.   Shortly after my biopsy - which showed I had cancer all through my prostate - my Urologist se...

I am very glad you shared your story. Mine is a similar story and it does me good to know fighting back in a wholistic manner is not a bad thing if it is what you feel you need. I started out at 28PSA and was diagnosed as a T3B. The cancer had spread to my Bladder, Seminal Vesicles and possibly my Lymphnodes. The sad thing is that no test showed any signs of it spreading at all. Lots of Dollars spent on lots of tests but none of them other than the PSA and then the Biopsy showed any sign of cancer. I guess you could say I got really lucky when I happened to find out about a Urological-Oncologisth in San Antonio Tx. The first Urologist wanted to do radical surgery immediately. I went to San Antonio and the Dr. there told me absolutely not!! IF i do surgery now I will be dead in a year. He put me on the same cocktail of drugs you were taking and it lowered my PSA to .02 in 3 months. Then He told me I could opt for Surgery or Radiation. I opted for the Surgery and it was a good thing I did. The cancer had spread to my bladder and the Radiation treatment would have intentionally avoided the bladder. Right now I am on Lupron and my PSA level has been at Less than .01 since the surgery. I too am using Flax Seed Oil (check out MD Andersons study), and a high fiber mostly vegan diet. I stopped taking the Lupron for 3 months and my PSA remained at .01. The local Urologist wants me to have radiation treatements anyway (of course he owns the equipement at $52K a pop) but I have not opted for that at this time. He continues to tell me I will become Hormone Resistant If I dont. Statistics do not seem to agree with his view. By the way, I was diagnosed in August of 2009. No symptoms prior. I am currently 52 and still living a good life.   Great to hear your story. Hopefully more people with our level will come forward and tell their story as well. Best wishes to you and keep on fighting !

Dear Greatful:

My understanding is that IF you can get the PSA, while on CHT, to .02 or there abouts... you should NOT have the cancer spread.  It will either stay as it is or even regress.   So, going with Radiation while you are so low on PSA is the exact opposite of what my Urologist says and what I have read!

After 18 months -2 years, the PSA may rise again!  When it does we can either go on alternative hormone treatments or Chemo or Radiation.  SOME people, however, using red wine, maitake d-fraction, indole 3-carninol and other supplements ( I can furnish the full list if you need it) and changing away from red meats have gone ten years on CHT and never had the PSA rise again.

I hope that this helps!!!  If you are still PSA of .02 or so... everything I have been told and have read says to WAIT!  We are in this together, amigo!  Let's us beat this thing!

my husband used the lupron chemo shots for two years... went into remission for two and half years... he had no bad side effects, except some mild heat flashes....his psa count started going up after this long period... so without  any worries he returned back to the shots.. in one moth his psa count went down 2 points... i say if it works ... try it... who cares if it did have any adverse side effects.. he didn`t turn into a woman... he didn`t grow breast.. we have been married for 36 years and i would rather have him than the sex... his loving wife

Dear B Childers:

Absolutely right!!  Staying alive is what a cancer battle is all about!  Besides, there are plenty of other ways to please your spouse.  A man cannot do anything if he is dead.

I think too many people today worry a bit too much about so-called "male performance" and they overlook that when cancer enters in.... most other things are kind of out.  You can still, as a man, have a ton of pride... but staying alive is what I take most pride in.

Yes, Lupron might give a man hot flashes and make erection impossible... but the hot flashes are somewhat minimal and there is so much more to life if you live it.

There is a school of thought that once you arrive at the low PSA score sometimes they take you off Lupron (so sex may return) until the score again rises significantly.  I think it is great that your husband is back on the Lupron and has gone 2.5 years so far.  GREAT work!!

Everything you said is absolutely right!

There are SO many new and promising drugs and strategies just coming out.  Health Central (ProstateCommons) will be at almost all of the future seminars and conferences digging for interviews and the real scoop!  Stay tuned to Health Central; and I will try to make the future brighter for you and your husband!!
