Dear Doctor,

I am 62 years old. I have had Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia for about 6 years. My latest PSA count is 0.9 and I have been on Flomax for the past 6 years. My urologist prescribed Avodart which I found prevented me from having a sexual climax so have stopped taking it. He has now suggested that he "implant" a Memokath Stent to handle the urethral stricture (my urine flow is very weak and very frequent).

Can you please tell me:

1) What the procedure involves?

2) What the risks are?

3) What is its' success rate?

4) How long does the "implant" last for?

Many thanks!!Big Smile

Hello Jonley,

I am not a doctor, but there are some excellent references online here that might help you understand a little better what your doctor has proposed. Now, online information is not meant to take the place of a doctor's advice, but will help you ask all the right questions when you see your doctor, so that together you can make a plan for your treatment and care that works for you.

Here is a link that explains the causes of HBP, and the treatments for BPH on Health Central. While I don't see alot about Memokath Stents, I do see information for these procedures.

I hope you find this helpful. Please stay in touch and let us know how you are doing!
