I just had the HOLEP Procedure for my enlarged prostate-I'm 66 years old.

My prostate was 170 grams (very large) and I could not urinate. On April 17, 2012 I went to the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and they performed the HOLEP (laser surgery) Procedure. Within 3 days I was off the pain pills. Within a week, I was back to work. Within a month I was sexually active with my wife. They removed 130 grams and no cancer was found. I was amazed at how easy it was to get into the Mayo Clinic and my insurance covered the procedure. I am back to normal. My urination flow is that of a 16 year old. I just had a 7 week check up and things are great. I still have some minor burning during urination but the doctor say that should subside in the future. I can not say enough wonderful things about the doctors and the Mayo Clinic.
The PSA Testing Controversy: Physicians Push Back Against USPSTF

I too have recently had a HOLEP procedure performed at Royal Berkshire Hospital in the UK - free of charge as part of our National Health Service. Like your experience I now have the flow of a teenager and no pain. The post-operative stage was virtually pain free with only minor bleeding for two weeks (caused mostly by constipation - make sure you are ready to take some laxative as the operation can cause 'lazy bowel' syndrome for a week or so). I had several years of worry as my PSA level rose gradually up to over sixteen and my flow degenerated to the point where I had to be very patient when urinating! However, the HOLEP procedure has allowed a full biopsy analysis of the removed material and was found to be benign. The specialists had previously wanted to undertake a fourth set of biopsies but I decided to pay for a private set of tests including the PCA3 test and an MRI scan which both came back negative. My advice to anyone who is suffering from poor flow and worrying about a rising PSA is to have the HOLEP procedure undertaken by an experienced surgeon. They may try to pursuade you to follow the old TURP route but from my experience HOLEP is quick, virtually pain free and has an immediate effect on your life.
