What Next After Drug Therapy Failed for BPH Treatment

I'm in mid 70 and have been taking Avodart and Flomax for the last two years for enlarged prostate. Little improvements of the sysmptons have been noticed with the medication therapy. Recently, my urologist recommends a two-step procedure to treat the conditions. First try the heat treatment using microwave, and then followed by TURP, a more invasive procedure, if the first method does not produce the deisred results. Would appreciate answers or comments to the following 2 questions:

(1). Is the two-step procedure described above widely adopted by urologists?

(2). Is there a better procedure than TURP, which results in a faster recovery with fewer complications and little adverse side effects.

I'm scheduled for the green light lazer procedure in mid December. Supposed to be nearly pain free compared to TURP. A friend had the TURP spring 2007 and was laid up for over a month. Drugs didn't work for me either so the docs at Mayo had me cathing 5 times a day(to protect my kidneys). Very embarassing at first maybe humiliated is a better word. Couldn't go or do anything i usually did because I was tied to needing a bathroom with a CLEAN table top. i started making prelubed kits and now i do eerything i used to.
