Frequent Urination for 85 year old Dad

By winston Sunday, December 09, 2007

My Dad is 85 years old. He recently had a hip revision, due to a dislocation. He is now recovering with a hip brace and is wearing diapers 24/7. He needs them most at night when he is up between 7-10x per night. How can someone heal after surgery without getting the rest they need. He is taking flomax in the evening and had been taking it for sometime. We are at our wits end this man needs a solution.

I'm NOT a physician but I have seen a number of patients, both ambulatory and confined to bed, who have indwelling catheters inserted into their urethras so that urine can drain out as necessary to either a convenient bag, bottle or other container depending on whether or not the patient is moving around.  The catheters can be replaced periodically to minimize likelihood of infections arising. They are usually not painful unless there is an underlying infection irritating the urethral lining, they are too large or they are roughly inserted.  You might consider this as there is no need to use diapers if properly inserted, and the patient does not have to get up during the night, hence sleep should be improved.  If the patient has latex sensitivity, then you should avoid the rubber type of catheter.  Of course, you should ask your physician if this is a prudent course of action to relieve your father's discomfort or need to urinate frequently.

Thank you for the information. My Dad is not a candidate for the cath. Based on his age the physician feels it is not an option. Thank you for the input just the same.

I was wondering if we could give my Dad his prostate meds during the day rather then at night would that make a difference
